The content in this article is the sort of information that I have added to my free ebook, 'How To Promote Your Band On The Internet'. You can access this free ebook by clicking on the link at the end of this article.
There are a number of options available on Facebook for you to use in order to promote your band. The three main options are a profile page, a fan page, and events.
Profile Page
You should create a profile for your band. Go through the same process that you would do if you were signing up for a new Facebook account for an individual, but use the account for your band. Enter your band name across the first name and last name boxes of the new user account. This way you can build up a list of friends for the band who will be able to see any updates you post relating to the band.
You should provide links on your profile page to your website and also to your Facebook fan page (we will discuss this next). Be proactive with your band Facebook profile. Participate in forum discussions and send out updates that your friends will find useful. Add new friends and share information as well as promote your band. If people find that you add value to discussions then people are more likely to want to be your Facebook friend and show an interest in your band compared to if you were constantly trying to sell something.
Fan Page
A fan page is more like a mini website where you promote your band on Facebook. Use it to your advantage. Post links to your website and other social networking profiles. Add your music to the fan page and sell your merchandise. You can also get your fan page visitors to signup to your mailing list.
When someone joins your fan page, all the friends of that person will be informed of this on their Facebook update feed. This may spark curiosity and others may also decide to check out your fan page as a result.
You are likely to have less fans on your fan page than friends on your band profile, but the members of your fan page are very valuable as they have specifically stated that they are interested in your band. You can therefore feel free to be more forward with your band promotion on your fan page than you would do using your profile.
Events
Create a new event for each of your shows and integrate these events into you fanpage. Many bands on Facebook have a calendar of all their tour dates. Each one of these tour dates will be a link to an individual Facebook event.
You can invite all members of your fan page to your event or specifically target people who live near the gig venue. Make sure you leave it as an open event so people can also invite their friends to the event. This is a great way to create new fans. Many times on Facebook I have been invited to go to a gig of a band that I had never heard of. I might go along to the gig because it acts as a good chance to catch-up with friends that I haven’t seen in a while. People may choose one of your shows as a convenient time to combine going to a gig with catching up with friends so take advantage of this to get new fans.
How To Get Loads Of Facebook Friends
There are specific Facebook groups that focus on building email and friend lists. Join these and add away! Also, some of these groups are likely to have a discussion topic titled ‘Mass Email List’ or something along those lines. Here there will be a long list of emails. Add your email to the list. Then copy and paste the entire list and click on the ‘Invite Friends’ button at the top of your Facebook page. You can invite friends by email address, so just copy in this mass list of email addresses and Facebook will add the friends for you. The people on these lists are likely to accept your friend request since they have already voluntarily signed up to the mass email list with the intention of building up their own friends list.
I have written a free ebook called 'How To Promote Your Band On The Internet' and I also discuss similar techniques to this to promote your band on Twitter, Youtube and Myspace.
