Tricks to change Windows XP OS language

This windows language changing problem occurred, when I tried to change Windows XP home version from German to English. I received an Acer Aspire one D250 model with Windows XP Home sticker and the OS language was German. As I am not a German language speaker and completely do not understand it, naturally, I do not need it. My best Win OS language is my native language, after all.

At first I tried to install the language change pack from Microsoft site

At first I tried to install the Microsoft Windows XP language change pack from Microsoft site and thought, that this would suffice. Well, I was wrong, because language pack installer could not do that. You can change your Win OS language, if it was, say, in English and you wanted to change it to non English language. I just wanted the opposite. I browsed through different forums on the internet and tried to figure it out someway. That took me about a few hours.

Some people on the internet talked about setting your Microsoft windows OS language to preferred one by changing the regional and language settings.

However, this would only affect the date, currencies and time related info in your country, but would not change your OS language.

ALT + F10 combination

I also entered the recovery disk by pressing the ALT + F10 combination during the windows restart, which lets you to restore the factory settings and, using the google translator, tried all the possible choices given on the screen. Well, after the factory settings have been restored and the computer rebooted, the Windows XP starting page would show, to my disappointment….welkommen (German language :(

1. Download your windows OS newest service pack in your preferred language. You can download it from Microsoft site or any other file sharing site. If, for example, you want English language (like me) download Win OSnewest service pack (3) in english.

2. Change registry key for your language:

go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMControlSet001ControlNlsLanguage registry key, and then change the value date for “Default” and “InstallLanguage” registry value, my case was from 0407 to 0409 (From German to English (United States).

Here is the list of numbers that represent most languages (not all) in windows registry:

Install your newest Win OS service pack

3. After you have changed the language registry try to install your newest OS service pack, which you downloaded from Microsoft site. If you already have service pack 3 in the language you want to change, don't worry - just try to install service pack 3 in your preferred language. Follow the on screen commands.

Warning! If your current Win OS does not allow you to make installation - restart your computer and try to install the service pack one more time.

Restart the computer

4. After the successful installation restart the computer. You should be able to see now Windows OS in your preferred language.

Enjoy!

Yes, enjoy your new win OS language

How To Keep Your Macbook Pro From Overheating

The Macbook Pro Overheating Problem

The Macbook Pro (MBP) is an impeccable machine. Apple has managed to cram the power of a desktop computer within the small aluminum frame of a fifteen inch screen notebook pc. With great power comes great responsibility, however!! The Macbook Pro generates a lot of heat, and I mean a lot. Mine frequently gets hot enough to cook an egg!!!

A hot Macbook Pro is a sad Macbook Pro. Though the Intel Core 2 Duos are rated to be able to withstand these temperatures, the heat can shorten the life of other components including the battery and hard drives. In fact, my battery lasts a paltry ten minutes!!! But that's beside the point.

There are generally two ways to go about remedying this problem. You can either purchase a laptop cooling device or force your Macbook Pro's fans to spin faster than their standard 2000 rpm.

Where To Buy A Macbook Pro Cooler

Most laptop coolers will work with the Macbook Pro, but you'll want to take note of a few key features.

  1. You will want a metal cooler, as this metal will help transfer some of the heat away from the MBP's aluminum body. With a plastic laptop you can get by with a plastic laptop cooler just fine, but with the Macbook Pro you'll definitely want a metal device.
  2. When choosing a cooler it's important to take note of the fan speed. A higher rpm will cool your laptop more efficiently, but it will also be more noisy. So it's important to balance speed and noise when choosing a laptop cooler.
  3. How is the notebook cooler powered? Does it use an AC adapter or is it powered through USB? A USB powered cooler is generally more convenient, but it does eat up one of your Macbook Pro's two USB slots. However, some devices (such as the Zalman ZM-NC 1000) incorporate a USB hub which will make up for the lost slot.

How to Check CPU Temperature and Motherboard Temperature

Checking CPU temperature through BIOS

So the first way to check your cpu temperature and motherboard temperature (often reffered to as system temperature) you have to enter your systems bios / setup.

Sometimes it can be hard to enter the bios especially when you have a very fast loading computer, so here are the basic steps

1. Upon Startup press DEL to enter SETUP (another name for BIOS) it may differ from motherboard it may be F1 or sometimes F2, if you having trouble seeing what key to press it should tell you at the very bottom of the screen press the PAUSE BREAK key on your keyboard so you pause your screen to take a closer look.

2. Once in BIOS , navigate to your motherboards Power or PC health Menu

3. Here you will see CPU TEMP, SYSTEM TEMP

example of bios screen, yours may be setup differently

Checking CPU temperature while in Windows/Linux

So for this method you can check the CD that came with your Motherboard for any software that allows you to check your CPU temperature. For this example I am using an ASUS motherboard which uses the ASUS AI Suite program to monitor CPU temperature, System temp and Clock speeds.

So you can simply install the program from your Motherboard CD, and open the program up which looks like below using the cpu temperature monitoring software

Shows CPU temp, System Temp , clock speeds and fan RPM's , here I only have a CPU fan running

HOW TO Use GMail offline with Google Gears

HOW TOUse GMail offline with Google Gears

Gmail has introduced its latest Labs feature called offline Gmail to enable e-mail access even when you are not connected to the Internet.

While this might sound uber geeky, the concept is simple enough when you actually use it. Oh, and the “offline” mode is already available in a simpler form if you happen to use Outlook or any other email client with Gmail POP access.

Gmail uses its Google Gears open source web application to enable the “offline” mode. Currently, Google lists Firefox 2, 3, and the Internet Explorer 7 in its list of supported browsers. Strangely, there is no mention of Google’s own, the Chrome! However, it might be because Chrome support is obvious.
Browse Gmail offline with Google Gears
What it does

The feature, which needs to be enabled from under the “Labs” option under “Settings,” downloads e-mails onto your computer and allows access even when there is no Internet connectivity. Users will be able to access most of their emails, reply to them, and view starred and unread messages, just like they do when Gmail is online. When you perform an action that needs web access, Gmail will queue the action and will execute it as soon the connection is restored. While it might not sound very exciting initially, I, for once, can realize how useful this might turn out to be. For many users, Gmail has become a data center, and I suspect that there are many people out there who would want to have a look at their mails and archives even when not connected to the Internet. The best thing is that once this feature is installed, Gmail will be able to go offline or online by detecting the network status, so you do not need to switch on/off the Offline mode manually. There is also this “Flaky Connection Mode” that detects a slow connection and uses the local cache for accessing data, and only uses the server when Gmail needs web access – like when hitting the send button.

Issues

As expected of a Labs feature, this application has been tested internally amongst 20,000 Google employees and has then been made available to the Labs. Not all users may see this enabled in their accounts, but the feature should be available to all in the coming days. As for the issues noticed, I have not seen anything go wrong in the little time that I have used this. However, CNET does report issues of the local cache going out of sync, but most issues can be sorted out by disabling and re-enabling the feature.

Check your LCD Monitor for Dead Pixels

Check your LCD Monitor for Dead Pixels
Check your LCD Monitor for Dead Pixels

Do you sometimes get the feeling there's a duff pixel on your LCD monitor? IsMyLcdOK can help you find out for sure.

IsMyLcdOK is a small app that doesn't require installation and, when running, allows you to test your LCD monitor and see if there are any stuck or 'dead' pixels. The menu screen shows you a list of the keyboard commands, which will take you through a color test, stress test and gradient test. After running through these screens, you should be able to see any dead pixels.

This is not a dead pixel detector, but makes it easy for the user to pick them out by sight. It offers no solutions, but knowing for sure if that dot on the screen is your imagination or not can be reassuring.

As it is small and doesn't require installation, IsMyLcdOK is fully portable and can be run from your USB drive if you want.

One Secret That Will Keep Your PC Secure

You Can Increase PC Security and Stop Most Spyware and Viruses With This Simple Tip
Almost all spyware can be blocked without buying special software. PC Security can be as simple as changing one setting on your computer. They won't give you the strategy at your big box retail store; perhaps they know it and perhaps they do not.

A Little Background
When you buy a PC and turn it on for the first time, Windows creates an account for you. Unfortunately your PC security is at risk almost immediately. While you get to select your account name and password, you do not get to choose your permission level. Your account, by default, gives you permission to do just about anything to the computer. You can install programs, remove programs, change security settings, edit the registry, and perform many other potentially disastrous tasks. However, you have no malice in your heart. You'll probably never do any of these things, right?

Actually, you do these things without being aware. Well, Windows does them in your name because you're logged on with administrative permissions. When you install a new program you usually need administrative permissions to complete the task. Windows anointed you as an 'admin' when your account was initially created. In a perfect world this isn't a problem. In a perfect world we all know what we're doing and no one wants to take over our computer to control it from China.

If you live in a perfect world, feel free to stop reading now.

Here's the rub: any program you launch will run with your current permissions. If you're logged on with admin permissions then your programs will have admin permissions. This includes spyware and malicious programs that you accidentally download from the Internet. This also includes email attachments that you accidentally open. Spammers depend on the opportunity to leverage your account permissions.

Demote Yourself!
"Super User" privileges seduce users, but any competent system administrator understands that it's dangerous to log in with admin permissions. One of the first points of emphasis in Admin School is to hammer home the risks of using a Windows computer as an administrator. This is also true for Linux computers, but Linux doesn't typically create new accounts with admin permission. When Linux adds user, it severely limits the capabilities of the new account.

Windows XP allows you to demote yourself to a Limited User. As a Limited User you don't have the permissions that a Computer Administrator User has. You can access the files you create and run most application programs but you can't make system-wide changes. You also can't install programs. In other words, if you accidentally download spyware then Windows usually won't allow it to install.

Demote yourself by opening the Control Panel and double-clicking on the Users icon. Change the Account Type from Administrator to Limited.

Windows 7 Keyboard Shortcuts

Windows 7 Keyboard Shortcuts

Let's kick off with keyboard shortcuts – the first thing every power user must memorize with working with a new operating system. In Windows 7, we’ve uncovered several new sets of essential time-saving shortcuts that will make your mouse jealous with neglect.

Alt + P

Windows 7 Keyboard Shortcuts

In Windows Explorer, activate an additional file preview pane to the right side of the window with this new shortcut. This panel is great for previewing images in your photos directory.

Windows + + (plus key)
Windows + - (minus key)

Windows 7 Keyboard Shortcuts

Windows 7 Keyboard Shortcuts

Pressing the Windows and plus or minus keys activates the Magnifier, which lets you zoom in on the entire desktop or open a rectangular magnifying lens to zoom in and out of parts of your screen. You can customize the Magnifier options to follow your mouse pointer or keyboard cursor. Keep in mind that so far, the Magnifier only works when Aero desktop is enabled.

Windows + Up
Windows + Down

If a window is not maximized, pressing Windows + Up will fill it to your screen. Windows + Down will minimize that active window. Unfortunately, pressing Windows + Up again while a window is minimized won’t return it to its former state.

Windows + Shift + Up

Similar to the shortcut above, hitting these three keys while a window is active will stretch it vertically to the maximum desktop height. The width of the window will however stay the same. Pressing Windows + Down will restore it to its previous size.

Windows + Left
Windows + Right

Windows 7 Keyboard Shortcuts

One of the new features of Windows 7 is the ability to automatically make a window fill up half of your screen by dragging to the left or right. This pair of shortcuts performs the same function without your mouse. Once a window is fixed to one side of the screen, you can repeat the shortcut to flip it to the other side. This is useful if you’re extending a desktop across multiple monitors, which prevents you from executing this trick with a mouse.

Windows + Home

This shortcut performs a similar function to hovering over a window’s peek menu thumbnail in the Taskbar. The active window will stay on your desktop while every other open application is minimized. Pressing this shortcut again will restore all the other windows.

Windows + E

Automatically opens up a new Explorer window to show your Libraries folder.

Windows + P

Windows 7 Keyboard Shortcuts

Manage your multiple-monitor more efficiently with this handy shortcut. Windows + P opens up a small overlay that lets you configure a second display or projector. You can switch from a single monitor to dual-display in either mirror or extend desktop mode.

Windows + Shift + Left
Windows + Shift + Right

If you are using two or more displays (and who isn’t, these days?), memorize this shortcut to easily move a window from one screen to the other. The window retains its size and relative position on the new screen, which his useful when working with multiple documents. Utilize that real estate!

Windows + [Number]

Programs (and new instances) pinned to your Taskbar can be launched by hitting Windows and the number corresponding to its placement on the Taskbar. Windows + 1, for example, launches the first application, while Windows + 4 will launch the fourth. We realize that this is actually one key-press more than just clicking the icon with your mouse, but it saves your hand the trouble of leaving the comfort of the keyboard.

Windows + T

Windows 7 Keyboard Shortcuts

Like Alt + Tab (still our all time favorite Windows specific shortcut), Windows + T cycles through your open programs via the Taskbar’s peek menu.

Windows + Space

Windows 7 Keyboard Shortcuts

This combo performs the same function as moving your mouse to the bottom right of the Taskbar. It makes every active window transparent so you can view your desktop. The windows only remain transparent as long as you’re holding down the Windows key.

Ctrl + Shift + Click

Hold down Ctrl and Shift while launching an application from the Taskbar or start menu to launch it with full administrative rights.

Ctrl + Click

Hold down Ctrl while repeatedly clicking a program icon in the Taskbar will toggle between the instances of that application, like multiple Firefox windows (though not browser tabs).

Which Design Code is Best for Search Engine Optimization?

HTML Is The Best Code For SEO

HTML is king when it comes to search engine optimization. The majority of websites on the Internet are HTML sites. Lately, there are more PHP sites showing up but PHP, by nature, is not SEO friendly. Java scripts and Flash may look good and can really jazz up a website, but they are totally ignored by the search engine spiders. The use of "iframes" is another practice that confuses the search engines. It makes it hard for them to analyse the websites link structure.

The truth of the matter is that the less code you use, the more search engine friendly your website will be.

Code tags get in the way of the search engine spiders and make their job more difficult. Despite this fact, proper use of HTML tags can actually improve your search engine ranking. You want to limit your use of tables and try to incorporate CSS (cascading style sheets) when ever possible. This will put a lot of the information for your sites "window dressing" at the top of the page and out of the tags. It will also remove a lot of unnecessary code for fonts and font properties. You want your HTML to be light and clean.

The Problem With PHP

PHP is an awesome time saving tool for webmasters. It creates dynamic web pages that let you make "global" changes by altering just one file. This gives you incredible flexibility and lets you create some very nice web sites. The problem is that PHP is not search engine friendly.

HTML is browser based and creates "static" pages. Your web browser reads the file and converts it into what you see. PHP is server based and creates "dynamic" pages. The information that is presented is contained on the server. The PHP code tells the browser to "get" information from the server which is normally contained in a data base. (most likely MYSQL)

This is where the problems start to occur. The process adds "get" variables and session id numbers to the url's. The search engine spiders don't like this and sometimes you have different url's with the same content. This creates confusion for the spiders and they may skip over pages and not index them at all.

I am not a PHP programmer but I am teaching myself a little PHP because I have a safelist script that I use and I want to be able to make changes on my own without paying a programmer. I know that there are ways around these SEO problems but they are much more involved than SEO with HTML and I am not the person to explain them.

If terms like "htaccess", "parsing ", "loop code", and "trans_sid", leave you with a blank glazed over stare, it is best to leave SEO for PHP to the experts. If you want to find out how to optimize your HTML for the search engines then keep on reading.

What is Search Engine Optimization

People refer to Search Engine Optimization (SEO), like it’s a golden set of actions that always have to be applied in order to reach a good ranking in the Search Engines. SEO is that common these days that all large websites hire their own SEO experts to optimize their websites and help them get more and more keywords in which they appear at the top in search engine results. On the other hand creating a new website without knowing anything about SEO you stand little chance of hitting any keyword what so ever instead you are more likely to sit in the 10th page of Google wondering what went wrong.

Quite often you will hear people complaining about people who perform SEO that they are cheating the results. My opinion on the matter is this: “It’s not cheating if everyone else is doing it”.

In my Hubpages and SEO Part 2 hub I’ve explained how hubpages optimize their website for faster indexing by Google amd get better results by performing “inpage” SEO, along with what you can do to take advantage of the techniques applied by Hubpages.

SEO despite what you may believe is extremely easy, yet time consuming and painstakingly annoying to set up the first time where you know nothing about it. I’ve found that the hard way when I developed my Top Rated Books website with a friend. I started out by developing a website which wanted to take the keywords “Top Rated Books”, “Top Rated Action Books”, “Top Rated Biography Books” etc yet after a week after I created the website and on the third version of the website I was ranking way down on the 9th page of Google wondering why that was. The “Inpage” SEO that I thought I’ve done was completely wrong and immediately (a few days) after I fixed that my website jumped 4 pages up.

Reading through articles all over the web I knew from the beginning that backlinks to your website where the most important “outpage” SEO part you could do. I’ve found out the hard way however that backlinks must not be made too early other Google will ignore them. This was a painstaking conclusion since a few days after I developed my website I’ve spent 2 days learning one of the most powerful SEO software SEnuke and applying those techniques to my website although it wasn’t indexed by Google and the “inpage” SEO was wrong.

Since I could not afford this software and was only running a trial version, when I’ve fixed the “inpage” SEO of my website I’ve started using manual techniques and using free software (some mentioned in my Hubpages and SEO part 1 hub) to my website and after a few days I saw my website jumping page after page in Google until reaching the second page and then the first page in my most desired keyword “Top Rated Books”. Now with my website safely ranking at the 5th position in Google I am still performing other techniques trying to get my website to the desired first 3 positions which might make all the difference for that website.

The point of my story is that the point of SEO is to separate the professionals from the amateurs. An amateur like myself is going to spent a month for their first website (especially if it’s a competitive keyword like mine) and only after they fix and tweak their website along the way they can reach the top. You may think it’s not fair when you create your first website and have to learn these things to reach the top, but once you reach the top for one website the others are easy to follow.

If you are only looking into applying the techniques to boost your hubs then you are in luck as you need to do only the “outpage” SEO since the “inpage” SEO is already done so well by hubpages that you can reach easily the first pages of Google in most keywords without doing anything.

Tips To get free Backlinks

Backlinks for High Search Engine Ranking

Backlinks are essential for targeted website traffic. Backlinks are links to your pages that are found in various places on the web. They tell search engines that your page is important and worth seeing by others thus convincing the SE's to give you the high search engine ranking. You can use these tips to get targeted website traffic to your hubpages articles, squidoo articles, blogs, and more to have a high search engine ranking then you may have thought possible.

Here are some tips to get more backlinks. You may or may not be comfortable with some of these methods. Pick and choose what you liked based on what you are most comfortable implementing into your own backlinking strategy for high search engine ranking

social bookmarking sites can give your site targeted website traffic over time thanks to the backlinks

Social Bookmarking Sites

Rarely will you find someone searching social bookmarking sites to find your unique content. Links within the social bookmarking site do not generatetargeted website traffic. You will see some web site traffic from these sites through your social bookmarking submissions, but because it is not information th is being specifically searched for, rarely is it going to lead towards any type of sale or advertising click through.

The purpose of posting on social bookmarking sites is not to gain targeted visitors directly from the social bookmarking sites but to get your page linked from them. The more popular social bookmarking sites offer PR, or page rank. Their purpose is to give you a backlink to your page that is considered to becoming from an authority site thus work toward your high search engine rank for high search engine ranking. Even the lower less popular social bookmarking sites will offer a backlink and even if it has no PR, it's still a backlink that can lead to high search engine ranking over time and with many spread out backlinks.

Unless you have a link-bait type post, that isn't going to gain web site traffic based on title alone and create a viewing targeted website traffic frenzy for the amazing information your site has to offer, stick to the formula below when posting to a social bookmarking site.

Here is a list of what are considered the 20 best Social Bookmarking Sites to keep you busy.

  • Your social bookmarking title should be the keyword(s) you want to promote. Grab the keyword that you think people will be searching for most, but that have the least amount of competition.
  • Always include dummy links every 2 to 5 link submissions to appear less like your spamming the site with just your page links. To find dummy links, try RSS feeds such as those on Yahoo RSS.
  • Add 3 to 5 short relevant keywords from your page for tags. Some social bookmarking sites limit the character count so choose wisely from your best keywords.
  • Create a description that is a few sentances long, short and to the point that describes your page and includes your title keyword at least twice. Do not keyword spam.
  • Keep track of your account information for each different social bookmarking site. So long as you are including quality dummy links, you can continue to use the same login for quite sometime.

Michael Jackson Email Virus: Warning

Some of the modern viruses are spreading over Internet through several ways and e-mail is one of the medium to spread viruses over Internet. How can you keep your computer running fast and problem-free?

By fast, do you mean, like when you first use it? One of the things which can slow you down is the Anti-Virus, but don't think you can live without it, due to the number of viruses floating around the Internet.

1. Do not install unnecessary software into your system.

2. Regularly delete your browsing history and cookies from

your Internet browser.

3. Scan your computer regularly with anti-virus, anti-malware,

etc. software.

4. Watch which websites you visit, as some may insert certain

entries into your registry without you knowing it, which will

slow your computer down.

Difficult to maintain it problem-free, as hardware components in the computer will deteriorate with usage. Some of the items like your Hard drive may have a manufacturing defect (if you are unlucky) and can fail. Do regular backups, just in case.

There are more things you can do, of course, and the above mentioned are just the general things you can do.

Tips to Make A Computer Run Faster
A computer is one of those devices that can make a person’s life very easy but if this machine is not properly maintained than it can cause frustration among users. This is because if there is no proper maintenance than the PC becomes too slow resulting in delays in work. There are some tips that can solve the problem of the PC being slow. Some of these tips are expensive but others just require some mere configurations and customization.

De-fragment your computer from time to time, to make it work faster. De-fragmentation means that all the files are arranged according to their size and types. This results in execution of program faster because the computer does not need to search the whole hard drive in order to find the relevant program. In order to defragment first click the start menu followed by programs, accessories and then system tool command. In this there will be a defragmentation tool, click it in order to defragment. By doing so, the speed of the PC will increase for free.

Other way to speed up computer is by adding more memory size on the PC. This will cost something as one would have to buy the extra memory devices and fix them on the PC.

Some other ways of making the PC more efficient include daily maintenance of the machinery. This means that the PC is dusted everyday because accumulation of dust causes the processor to overheat, which might not only cause slowing down of the PC but may result in serious injuries as well. Then memory and other devices (power supply, upgrading the processors etc.) should be checked frequently, and an anti-virus should be installed and updated every now and then. Programmes such as RegInOut clean the registry and hence providing extra space. More memory the PC has, faster it will run.
